Why Fit Matters

The right size makes a big difference

In hockey, equipment that fits properly does more than just feel comfortable. It helps you move better, protects you properly, and lasts longer. Many players, especially those new to the game, assume that slightly bigger gear will give them room to grow or feel more comfortable. In reality, the wrong size often creates the opposite effect. At Centre Ice, we see it regularly. Skates that are too big. Protection that shifts during play. Sticks that are the wrong length. Small sizing issues can affect how the game feels and how equipment performs.

Sticks

Stick length and flex also play a role in performance. A stick that is too long can make puck handling awkward and affect shooting mechanics. A stick that is too short can limit reach and change skating posture. Choosing the right size stick helps players develop proper technique and control.

Skates

Skates are the most important piece of equipment you own.

If skates are too large, your foot moves inside the boot. That movement reduces power transfer and makes it harder to control your edges. It can also lead to blisters and discomfort.

If skates are too small, pressure points develop and the skate cannot flex properly.

A correctly fitted skate should feel snug and secure, with your heel locked in place and just enough room for your toes to move naturally.

Protective Equipment

Protective gear only works properly when it stays where it is supposed to.

Shoulder pads, elbow pads, and shin guards that are too big will shift during movement or contact. When that happens, the areas they are meant to protect can become exposed.

If gear is too small, it can restrict movement and create pressure points.

Proper sizing allows protection to sit in the correct position while still allowing full mobility.

Growing Players

We approach choosing equipment that fits properly now while still allowing a reasonable amount of growth where appropriate.

Growing Players

Parents often choose larger equipment hoping it will last longer as a player grows.

While this is understandable, oversized gear can slow development and reduce confidence on the ice.

A better approach is choosing equipment that fits properly now while still allowing a reasonable amount of growth where appropriate.

Getting It Right

Proper sizing is one of the most important parts of choosing hockey equipment.

That is why we take the time to measure, assess, and guide players toward the right fit for their level and how often they play.

If you are unsure about sizing, we are always happy to help.
