Kiwi Hockey School / Juniors
Kiwi Hockey School and junior hockey is where players fall in love with the game. At this stage, the focus is on safety, comfort, and learning proper habits - not high-end performance gear.
This guide helps parents choose the right equipment the first time, avoid unnecessary upgrades, and ensure young players feel confident every time they step on the ice.
Essential Equipment Checklist
✔ Helmet (with full face cage)
✔ Neck guard (required in many leagues)
✔ Shoulder pads
✔ Elbow pads
✔ Gloves
✔ Hockey pants
✔ Shin guards
✔ Protective cup / jill
✔ Hockey skates
✔ Stick (correct height & flex)
✔ Hockey socks & jersey
✔ Base layers (recommended)
You can rent equipment initially through your local IHNZ Kiwi Hockey School programme.
What Matters Most at This Stage
Lightweight & Comfortable
Heavy, stiff equipment can overwhelm new players. Entry-level junior gear is designed to:
- Be lighter
- Offer appropriate protection for non-checking levels
- Allow better mobility for learning skills
Stick Size & Flex Matters
An incorrectly sized stick can slow development.
As a starting point:
- Stick should reach between chin and nose in with the child on their tippy toes.
- Junior players typically require low flex sticks suited to their strength.
We’re happy to measure and cut sticks in-store.

A Note for Parents
At this level, development and confidence matter most. The right equipment helps kids enjoy the game and focus on learning - not adjusting uncomfortable gear.
